The Division of Transplantation Pathology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center offers a comprehensive consultation service in solid organ transplantation pathology to community and university based physicians. Dr. Anthony Demetris is the director of the Division of Transplantation Pathology and has served as the Immune Tolerance Network (ITN) core laboratory director for liver pathology analysis since 2003. More recently, Dr. Demetris' services were extended to performing kidney pathology evaluations for ITN kidney transplant trials.

The University of Pittsburgh Laboratory will conduct routine analysis on 3 active ITN liver transplant studies. Analyses will be performed on all biopsies requiring an evaluation of the amount of fibrosis. In addition to continuing routine analysis for liver transplant studies, The University of Pittsburgh Pathology Laboratory will provide analysis of renal allograft biopsies. Analysis of renal allograft biopsies will be very similar to liver allograft biopsies, but involves a different panel of stains routinely applied to kidney allograft.
