The Immune Tolerance Network (ITN) is a collaborative network for clinical research, funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The ITN, headquartered at the Benaroya Research Institute (BRI) in Seattle WA, has major operations centers at BRI and in San Francisco at University of California San Francisco (UCSF).

The Director of Biomarker & Discovery Research (BDR) is a full-time position that is an integral part of the ITN management team related to biomarker discovery and validation efforts associated with multiple complex clinical trials to induce and maintain immunological tolerance.
As Director of BDR the incumbent will be responsible for managing a staff of PhD scientists, designing and developing mechanism of action (MOA) studies for clinical trials, analyzing and interpreting data generated from MOA studies, collaborating on efforts for assay design, development and data interpretation with ITN Principal Investigators and Core Laboratory Directors, and writing and co-writing original research manuscripts for publication submission.
Under the direction of the ITN Deputy Director (UCSF), the incumbent will be responsible for coordinating the design of research projects as they relate to support of ITN clinical trials, including identification of new technologies for consideration by ITN leadership, as well a use of existing assays and providing cost assessments for projects. Oversight of the incumbent's responsibilities will be provided by the ITN Deputy Directors and the ITN Director. Specific goals and deliverables, such as protocols developed, manuscripts written, assay projects completed and overall assessment of the incumbent contributions to the scientific design, development and analysis of the biomarker discovery efforts are the primary basis for evaluation. Additionally, the incumbent s management skills including timeline management, personnel management, communication skills and ability to design, develop and manage complex scientific discovery efforts are essential aspects of successful job performance.
This PhD position requires independent scientific and critical thinking skills with a strong background in immunology and translational medicine in autoimmunity. This position involves communication with professionals in other parts of the ITN, including protocol development and data discussions with the Clinical Trials Group (CTG), discussions of budgets with the ITN Administrative Director (ITN AD), discussions of specimen acquisition, management, shipment, and tracking with the ITN Mechanistic Operations group, and discussions of data base issues with the ITN Bioinformatics (BiG) group. The Director will also be expected to liaise with ITN Principal Investigators (PI s), industry representatives and the ITN Deputy Directors and ITN Director.
