Mourning the Loss of Dr. Josh Levitsky

February 22, 2025

The Immune Tolerance Network (ITN) mourns the tragic loss of one of our valued collaborators, Josh Levitsky, MD, MS, FAST, FAASLD, a highly respected leader in the field of liver transplantation. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to his wife, Rachel, children Mia Beth and Benjamin Graham, and to all who loved him.

Dr. Levitsky served as a Professor of Medicine, Surgery, and Medical Education and Hepatology Program Chief in the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Levitsky was the protocol chair for the soon-to-be launched “Everolimus and Epoetin for Sustained liver transplant Tolerance” (EVEREST) trial, whose aim is to examine the ability of everolimus (EVR) and epoetin alfa (EPO) to induce operational tolerance in stable adult liver transplant recipients.  Additionally, Dr. Levitsky has been working with the ITN on a protocol to test the ability of regulatory T cells to induce tolerance in patients with autoimmune hepatitis.  Dr. Levitsky also served as an informal advisor to the ITN on other projects in our portfolio.  His scientific and clinical advice will be missed as will his exemplary kind and enthusiastic demeanor.  Josh is especially remembered for his generosity to his colleagues and his commitment to achieving better outcomes for his liver transplant patients.

“Josh’s brilliance, energy and dedication to improving the lives of his patients made it an honor for me to work with him. His warmth, compassion and generosity of spirit made it a genuine pleasure. We will miss him terribly at the ITN”, said Dr. Sindhu Chandran, MD the lead Transplant Clinical Trial Physician for the ITN.
